Frequently Asked Questions
Who can practise yoga?
Yoga is suitable for everyone, old or young, fit or not so fit. If you have a specific medical condition please let me know before the start of the first class, to ensure that what you practise is appropriate for you personally.
I’m very stiff – I can’t even touch my toes!
Yoga is not really about being flexible, or about “exercising”. With regular practice, yoga will help you maintain or regain normal functional movement, improve range of movement, and develop strength. But, perhaps more importantly, yoga will help you to develop awareness and the capacity to pay attention to what is happening – not only in your body, but also in your mind and heart. Gradually, we learn to take this off the mat too, and so our practice helps us to live life more responsively and usefully, whether or not we happen to be naturally bendy. The practices of yoga incorporate the whole person, not just the body.
Do I need to bring anything with me?
I provide all equipment for classes taught in my studio in Stroud. If you are coming to other classes, bring a yoga mat, cushion, and blanket.
Can I eat before coming?
It is recommended that you do not eat for at least two hours beforehand. However, if you need to eat within this period - especially if you are a pregnant woman – a banana or a few biscuits or similar half an hour before class shouldn’t be a problem.
Can I try a class first?
You are welcome to come along for a trial class before commtting to a block of classes. Contact me if you’d like to do this. In the meantime, here is a taste of a short settling/relaxation practice followed by some gentle breathwork – this is the sort of thing we might do at the end of a beginners’ class.
What clothes should I wear?
Loose comfortable clothing is recommended. Layers are good – easy to take off and put on! Avoid belts, and back pockets as these can be uncomfortable when you work on the floor. The most important thing is to feel comfortable and relaxed.
